Il Lazzaretto began in 2014 as a cultural association, and was established as a Foundation in 2017. Its mission is to promote collective and individual transformation processes, opportunities for change and growth, through cultural participation projects characterized by an open and inclusive approach, free from stereotypes and misconceptions. The approach that Il Lazzaretto adopts in all its research is “methodological doubt”: asking questions that are as generative as possible, consciously implementing doubt as a means of collecting varied, and often dissonant, responses that can constantly offer an insight into the present and its transformations. For this purpose, the Foundation raises funds to promote and support research and initiatives based on a fruitful exchange among visual arts, psycho-physical practices and performing arts.
Il Lazzaretto works mainly through two means:
VIRUS! A program of dialogues and workshops with artists, performers, curators, philosophers, and scientists. The public, specialist and otherwise, is invited to contribute to the co-creation of the “Festival of Madness!” by asking questions, voicing concerns, and providing ideas and points of view on the festival’s theme. “Virus!” puts the public at the center of the creative process.
THE FESTIVAL OF MADNESS! Four days of performances, exhibitions, conversations, workshops, and psycho-physical practices. It is held in Milan at the headquarters of the Lazzaretto Foundation and beyond, with the desire to spread a spark of madness throughout the city. The Festival is the result of a year of work, of dialogues, workshops with artists, performers, curators, philosophers, and scientists. The audience is called on to contribute to the programming of the festival by asking questions, and providing ideas and points of view.
This year, thanks to its partnership with FARE and AIR – artinresidence, and the contribution of the Cariplo Foundation, Il Lazzaretto has decided to introduce a residency for two foreign artists.
With a perspective of reshaping and rethinking artistic practices in the digital field, the residency will be implemented online and not in person. Considering the complexity and difficulties of the current situation, this modality of residency marks the beginning of a new path, aimed at developing new research strategies and methodologies. During a period of two months, the selected artists will find a dedicated online space for research, mutual exchange and discussion, which will have a guiding theme chosen by Il Lazzaretto as its objective, and the city and community of Milan as its context. What is required of each artist is therefore to perform a creative act through the exchange of ideas, thoughts and visions, in an open and fruitful relationship with the other artist sharing the residency, with a specific community and / or with a more general audience. Through one-on-one meetings, artists will be supported by tutors who can encourage their reflection process by providing useful research material, facilitating targeted meetings, and providing support for the activation of workshops.
THEME Every year, Il Lazzaretto focuses its programming on a theme on which heterogeneous and pluralistic views are welcomed and stimulated. To this end, the questions contained in the call represent some of the possible interpretations and implications of the chosen 2020 edition theme.
Madness is the overall theme of 2020 at Il Lazzaretto. The artists, authors and organizations involved in the cultural programming of Il Lazzaretto are encouraged to investigate the relationship that individuals and society have with madness, promoting a reflection on the perception of the self and of others, and on its (re)construction. This means not only talking about otherness, diversity, incommunicability, fear, misunderstanding, non-standardized or unresolved views, but also of creativity, the relationship between madness and art movements over time, codes of behavior and clothing. In short, it means facing and confronting otherness, real or imaginary places, and their prospective borders.
PARTICIPANTS The residency is aimed at artists or collectives of artists who reside abroad, and work through participatory practices with the use of any technique or language (performance, dance, theater, sculpture, painting, installations, video, digital, photography, etc.).
FACILITIES Il Lazzaretto will make available to the artist:
Tutoring through FARE staff;
Artist Fee of € 2,000.00. In the case of a collective of artists, the amount of the Artist Fee is € 2,000.00 total (not per-person);
Production budget up to a maximum of € 5,000.00, managed by Il Lazzaretto.
CONDITIONS Artist responsibilities:
Development of a project based on the guiding theme of Il Lazzaretto involving a specific audience or community through one or more activities;
Documentation of the residency via online tools (blog, dedicated website, podcast…), focusing on the research process experienced by the artist;
Final presentation of the project during the “Festival of Madness!”, with modalities and spaces to be determined on a project-specific basis;
Production of a paper related to the project, to be delivered by November 30, 2020
Remain available for any future communication needs related to the residency.
Il Lazzaretto recognizes the artist’s wider freedom of method and work with respect to the project’s research and implementation, notwithstanding the active participatory dimension of the community identified in the design phase. Joining the residency program implies unconditional acceptance of these regulations; of the judgment of the selection committee made up of the staff of Il Lazzaretto and FARE; and of all stipulations contained in the signed agreement.
TIMEFRAME Residency takes place in six stages:
Launch of the call by invitation and collection of applications: June 27-August 2, 2020
Notification to the two selected artists: August 10, 2020
Period of residency: September 7-November 7, 2020
Final presentation of the project during the “Festival of Madness!”: 12-15 November, 2020
APPLICATION PROCEDURE To participate in the residency program, the following materials are required:
Portfolio in pdf format. Any audiovisual or multimedia content must be presented on platforms or websites, and listed in the portfolio in the form of links;
Curriculum and short bio in pdf format;
Letter of presentation of your artistic and professional career and your interest in the subject matter of the call (maximum 2,000 characters, pdf format);
DEADLINE The completed materials must be sent to call@illazzaretto.com by August 2, 2020. The material sent will not be returned. The selection committee may request a Skype interview of the candidate.
IL LAZZARETTO Il Lazzaretto is the place of contagion and contamination, where you can play with certainties and boundaries, practice the art of doubt, and elicit possible meanings. Here, you enter certain, and then discover yourself bewildered; you exit amazed, and return more curious than before. Lazzaretto is an idea and a practice, a testing ground, and an open and flexible physical space. Historically, it was a place of recovery and separation from the rest of the world. A Plague of Madness today means opening up to possible contaminations of the world; it means walking on the borders, forcing the limits with irony and fun; trying to combine logic and imagination, scientific approach and trepidation, unyielding investigation and creative courage; in the end, trying to promote a reflection on the individual and collective processes of change and transformation.
FARE Created with the aim of enhancing and promoting contemporary culture, FARE is an organization operating in the field of visual art. Its main focus is on detecting and addressing issues concerning the cultural system and their players: what is missing, what should be done, what proposals are made. The dominant feature is the connection, the research based on the sharing of ideas, interests, strategies, in and around contemporary visual arts. Collaborative projects are created with foundations, associations, cultural and training organizations; along with more complex projects such as the creation and management of national and international networks in the field of training and mobility for artists, curators and cultural operators. Through contemporary art and its participatory, inclusive and transnational processes, FARE promotes territories and identities; contributes to the social growth of the communities with which it communicates; and promotes the development of the public through art residencies, exhibitions, publications, and educational projects. FARE works in the format of art residencies, and develops exchange programs with international partners based on interdisciplinary research and the sharing of knowledge and experience. The programs focus on different areas of interest: the know-how of residential practices; the relationship between art and the public sphere; public development and engagement. In 2010, FARE created AIR – artinresidence.it, the only Italian network of art residencies.

Il Lazzaretto è nato nel 2014 come Associazione culturale, per poi trasformarsi in Fondazione non-profit nel 2017. La sua missione è volta a favorire processi di trasformazione collettiva e individuale, percorsi di cambiamento e crescita, attraverso momenti di partecipazione culturale, caratterizzati da un approccio aperto, interrogativo e libero da stereotipi e preclusioni. L’approccio che Il Lazzaretto adotta in tutte le sue ricerche è il “dubbio metodologico”: porre domande il più possibile generative, praticare consapevolmente il dubbio come modo per raccogliere risposte plurali e spesso dissonanti che possano, di volta in volta, offrire un osservatorio sul presente e sulle sue trasformazioni. A questo scopo raccoglie fondi per promuovere e sostenere ricerche e iniziative dove arti visive, pratiche psico-fisiche e arti performative si incontrano. Il Lazzaretto lavora principalmente con due strumenti:
VIRUS! Un programma di dialoghi e workshop con artisti, performer, curatori, filosofi, scienziati, dove il pubblico, specialistico e non, è invitato a per contribuire alla co-creazione della programmazione del Festival della Peste ponendo dubbi e domande, fornendo idee e punti di vista, mettendosi in relazione e in confronto diretto con il tema dell’anno. Virus! mette il pubblico al centro del processo creativo.
IL FESTIVAL DELLA PESTE! Quattro giorni di performance, mostre, conversazioni, laboratori, pratiche psico-fisiche, a Milano, nella sede della Fondazione Il Lazzaretto e oltre, con la volontà di contagiare la città. Risultato di un anno di lavoro, di dialoghi, di workshop con artisti, performer, curatori, filosofi, scienziati, di dialogo con un pubblico chiamato a contribuire alla programmazione del festival ponendo domande, fornendo idee e punti di vista.
Quest’anno Il Lazzaretto, grazie al contributo di Fondazione Cariplo e alla partnership con FARE e AIR – artinresidence, ha deciso di introdurre una residenza per due artisti stranieri. In un’ottica di sperimentazione e di riconfigurazione delle pratiche artistiche in ambito digitale, la residenza si svilupperà online e non in presenza. Nata come risposta progettuale alla complessità della difficile situazione del momento, questa modalità di residenza segna l’inaugurazione di un nuovo percorso, pensato in una prospettiva di sviluppo di rinnovate strategie e metodologie. Durante un periodo di due mesi gli artisti selezionati troveranno nel web uno spazio, a loro riservato, di ricerca, confronto e discussione che avrà come oggetto il tema guida scelto da Il Lazzaretto e come contesto il territorio della città di Milano e la sua comunità di riferimento. Ciò che si richiede a ciascun artista è dunque di attivare un atto di creazione attraverso un processo di condivisione di idee, riflessioni e visioni, aperto alla relazione e al confronto con l’altro artista che condivide con lui la residenza, con una specifica comunità e/o con un pubblico più generico. A disposizione dell’artista ci sono i tutor che, attraverso incontri one-to-one, potranno stimolare la sua riflessione inviando materiale utile alla ricerca, facilitando incontri mirati e fornendo supporto per l’attivazione di workshop.
TEMA Il Lazzaretto ogni anno focalizza la propria programmazione su un tema rispetto al quale intende stimolare e accogliere sguardi eterogenei e plurali. In questa direzione, le domande contenute nell’incipit della call rappresentano alcuni dei modi possibili di leggere e interpretare il tema scelto per l’edizione 2020.
La Pazzia è il tema guida del 2020 al Lazzaretto. Gli artisti, gli autori e le organizzazioni coinvolti nella programmazione culturale del Lazzaretto sono sollecitati a indagare il rapporto che individuo e società hanno con la follia, promuovendo una riflessione sulla percezione del sé e dell’altro e sulla sua ri-costruzione. Significa parlare di alterità, di diversità, di incomunicabilità, di paura, di aspetti non normati e non pacificati, di incomprensione, ma anche di gesto creativo, del rapporto tra follia e correnti artistiche nel tempo, di codici di comportamento e di abbigliamento; significa, insomma, affrontare e confrontarsi con l’alterità e con un luogo reale o immaginario e con i suoi eventuali confini.
DESTINATARI La residenza è rivolta ad artisti, o collettivi di artisti, residenti all’estero che lavorino con le pratiche di partecipazione attraverso l’uso di qualsiasi tecnica o linguaggio (performance, danza, teatro, scultura, pittura, installazioni, video, digital, fotografia…).
FACILITIES Il Lazzaretto metterà a disposizione dell’artista:
Tutoring svolto dallo staff di FARE.
Artist Fee di 2.000,00 euro. Nel caso di un collettivo di artisti l’importo della Fee non cambia.
Budget di produzione fino ad un massimo di 5.000,00 euro gestito da Il Lazzaretto.
CONDIZIONI Cosa viene richiesto all’artista:
Sviluppo di un progetto sul tema guida del Lazzaretto che coinvolga un target group attraverso una o più attività di laboratorio durante il mese di residenza;
Documentazione della residenza in modalità online (blog, sito dedicato, podcast…) che lasci traccia dell’esperienza vissuta in termini di ricerca e di processo;
Restituzione finale del progetto durante il Festival della Peste! con modalità e spazi da individuare anche in base alle specificità del progetto;
Produzione di un testo relativo al progetto, da consegnarsi entro il 30 novembre 2020;
Disponibilità per eventuali necessità di comunicazione collegate alla residenza.
Il Lazzaretto riconosce all’artista la più ampia libertà di metodo e lavoro rispetto alla ricerca e alla realizzazione del progetto, ferma restando la dimensione di partecipazione attiva della comunità individuata in fase progettuale. L’adesione al programma di residenza implica l’accettazione incondizionata del presente regolamento, del giudizio della commissione selezionatrice composta dallo staff de Il Lazzaretto e di FARE e del contratto integrale che verrà stipulato.
TEMPISTICHE La residenza si svolge in sei fasi:
Lancio della call su invito e raccolta candidature: dal 27 giugno al 2 agosto 2020
Comunicazione dei due artisti selezionati: 10 agosto 2020
Periodo di residenza: dal 7 settembre al 7 novembre 2020
Presentazione finale del progetto durante il Festival della Peste!: dal 12 al 15 novembre 2020
MODALITÀ DI CANDIDATURA Per partecipare al programma di residenza si richiede l’invio dei seguenti materiali:
Portfolio in formato pdf. Eventuali contenuti audiovisivi o multimediali dovranno essere presenti su piattaforme o siti internet e riportati all’interno del portfolio in forma di link;
Curriculum e breve bio in formato pdf;
Lettera di presentazione del proprio percorso artistico e professionale e dell’interesse nei confronti del tema oggetto del bando (massimo 2.000 caratteri, formato pdf).
DEADLINE I materiali completi dovranno essere inviati all’indirizzo call@illazzaretto.com entro il 2 agosto 2020. Il materiale inviato non verrà restituito. La commissione selezionatrice potrebbe richiedere ai candidati un colloquio via Skype.
IL LAZZARETTO Il Lazzaretto è il luogo del contagio e delle contaminazioni, dove giocare con certezze e confini, praticare l’arte del dubbio e provocare significati possibili. Al Lazzaretto si entra certi, per poi scoprirsi spaesati, uscire stupiti, tornare più curiosi di prima. Il Lazzaretto è un’idea e una pratica, un terreno di sperimentazione e uno spazio fisico aperto e flessibile. Storicamente, era luogo della cura e della separazione dal resto del mondo. Essere una peste, oggi, significa aprirsi alle possibili contaminazioni del mondo; significa camminare sui confini, forzare il limite con ironia e divertimento, provare a combinare assieme logica e immaginazione, approccio scientifico e trepidazione, investigazione inflessibile e coraggio creativo, e, in ultima istanza, provare così a promuovere una riflessione sui processi di cambiamento e trasformazione individuale e collettiva.
FARE FARE nasce con lo scopo di valorizzare e promuovere la cultura del contemporaneo operando nell’ambito dell’arte visiva. Si caratterizza per un attento esercizio di ascolto del sistema e dei suoi operatori: cosa manca, cosa va fatto, cosa si vorrebbe fare. L’attitudine dominante è la connessione, la ricerca progettuale improntata alla condivisione di idee, interessi, strategie dentro e attorno alle arti visive contemporanee. Nascono progetti di collaborazione con fondazioni, associazioni, enti culturali e di formazione e progetti più complessi come l’articolazione e la gestione di reti nazionali e internazionali nel campo della formazione e della mobilità per artisti, curatori e operatori culturali. FARE attraverso l’arte contemporanea e la sua dimensione partecipativa, inclusiva e transnazionale, promuove territori e identità, concorre alla crescita sociale delle comunità con cui dialoga, favorisce lo sviluppo di pubblico attraverso residenze, mostre, pubblicazioni, progetti educativi. FARE opera con il formato della residenza d’artista e sviluppa programmi di scambio, con partner internazionali, basati sulla ricerca interdisciplinare e la condivisione di conoscenze ed esperienze. I programmi indagano diverse aree di interesse: il know how di pratiche residenziali; il rapporto tra arte e sfera pubblica; lo sviluppo e il coinvolgimento del pubblico.
