Velferden Centre for Contemporary Art is an artist run space located in the 50´s community hall of an old mining town, in the rural area of Sokndal in southwestern Norway. At Velferden exhibitions, residencies, concerts are produced and curated and dialogues in relation to the local mining history, geology, tourism and contemporary art are arranged. The art centre is located in Magma Unesco Global Geopark, and the nature is characterised by moon-like rock formations combined with an industrial landscape resulting from 150 years of mining activity.
What they offer:
The residency offers two artists a chance to concentrate and develop existing or new work during their stay. Each artist will receive a stipend of 24000 NOK, and get travel expenses covered for up to 4000 NOK.
Velferden is situated 1hr 40 minutes by car from Stavanger, and 15 minutes by bike/ 5 minutes by car from the centre of the small town of Sokndal. The town has two grocery stores, two garages and a post office i.e. The immediate surroundings of Velferden are historical and industrial with easy access to a varied nature with both mountains and forests.
The two selected artists will share accommodation located about 5 minutes walk from Velferden. Each artist will be given a private bedroom and will share bathroom, kitchen and livingroom. The artists will be allocated a shared studio space with 24 hr access in Velferdens main gallery. Velferden is also an excellent space for working outdoors and in the surrounding landscape.
During the two months, the artists will get an extensive introduction to the area, and will get the chance to meet up with the regional art scene in Sandnes/Stavanger.
Two guest curators/artists will present their work at Velferden and offer studio visits to the artists, and in March there will be a weekend seminar on the subject of Maps in which the artists are welcome to join.
What they get:
They get the chance to get to know, and share knowledge and experience with two interesting artists! They look for self reliant professionals who can benefit from a working stay in the unique setting that they have to offer at Velferden. The artists are not expected to show finished work, but will be asked to share their processes with us in a public presentation. The artists are requested to be present at the residency for minimum 25 days each month. If gone for longer than this, the stipend will be reduced. The artists must also have a valid personal insurance for the whole period.
